🌿What a year. A year with many ups and many downs, but above all I am incredibly grateful for your support. Every order, every purchase at a fair, every reaction, every sweet message. Thank you! The Forest Bear | De Grote Beer "Soft as mother eyes Strong as the embrace of father arms" I can't tell you how incredibly grateful and excited I am to be creating my oracle deck in collaboration with the amazing @amandabeelen. A year ago I married my best friend. The one with whom I can walk for hours through the woods, who supports my art dream, with whom I can laugh and cry, and above all, the one who loved the crazy idea of ​​a fantasy-forest-pagan-handfast wedding as much as I did. The Crow-raven I remember reading a Lenape story as a small girl, about the crow being one of the most colourful and beautiful feathered bird with the voice of an angel. After a long period of cold weather, the animals became worried and decided to send a messenger to the Great Sky Spirit to ask for relief. The crow makes the journey to the Spirit and carries back a gift of fire. He returns, but the fire has scorched his beautiful plumage black, and his voice has been made rough and hoarse by the smoke. I always loved the story, remembering that someone as a crow, often being negatively symbolized as death and bad luck, can have a beautiful other story 🖤 The crow-raven, the first in line of the totem animals. Fairy Circle Dance Mushroom circles in the forest are always a lovely surprise to find. Those fairy circles play a huge role in old beliefs and folklore, such as portals or places where elves and witches meet. In Dutch, my mother language, fairy circles translate to 'witches circle'. Imbolc is near 💚 Here in the Netherlands the sun occasionally shines through the gray skies again. I used to live less with the seasons, but now that I live in an old and very cold house near the forest, you feel completely revived when spring is in the air (no more four sweaters and two scarves!). The difference a season makes... 🌲

Bossymbiose | Forest symbiosis Symbiosis means 'living together', a close interaction between two or more biological species. I am always fascinated by trees that, over the years, 'eat' things such as signs or bicycles parked against the bark. What would it be like for a human to enter into a symbiosis with a tree? Can we as humans live as one with nature, not in a parasitic symbiosis, but one as equals that benefits both? My newest drawing, Forest Symbiosis

Sometimes I want to go to the forest and lie there on the moss until I am in perfect symbiosis with the woodlands Until that moment, one step at a time - one breath at a time.

In nature, never goes ever to waste. My drawings are an ode to nature, specifically the forest, so why should trees be cut down for my prints? My art prints are and will be 100% made of paper made of agricultural waste such as leaves and stems. The environmental impact of this paper called Paperwise is 47% lower than paper made from trees and 29% lower than recycled paper. Together, we can make the world a bit better, one art print at the time 💚🌿🌲

For some time now I have dreamed of not only drawing, but also writing. The forest where I live, the Dutch Veluwe, has a huge range of folklore. I really enjoy the old, second-hand books about folk beliefs and myths, handed down from generation to generation. I get a lot of ideas from this local folklore. Stories of lakes, of trees and forests, of hunters and witches, of seers and dancers. Stories of women with wild hair and sheepskins, tales of shapeshifters and sorceresses. Stories that provide a lot of inspiration. 💚 But, as with many drawings and paintings, stories must also develop slowly. There is a place in the woods where I live that always feels like home. Whatever the season, there is always moss growing over the fallen trees, always there are the green branches that intertwine. Definitely one of my favorite places in the forest. Do you also have a place (in a forest) that always makes you happy?🌿

A detail from one of my more recent works and one that I am very happy with, the Boar crone. The wild boar is one of the animals that live in the forest that my studio is adjacent to. The forest animals are a great source of inspiration🌿

The trees here are still full of autumn colors, but my latest Yule Christmas cards have arrived! The drawing is inspired by wise women from folk tales and archaeological excavations from the forest where my studio is located. Of course, this card is also printed on environmentally friendly paper, made from leaves and stems of harvest waste. Everywhere I go for an extended period of time, I take prints of my drawings with me. Nowhere do they come so alive as in the Norwegian forests, surrounded by ancient mossy stones and silent lakes high in the mountains 🌿

The first time I told my husband that I loved dolmens, he laughed as if I had meant it as a joke I understand Compared to amusement parks and swimming pools and concerts and festivals What kind of pleasure is there to be found in a pile of stones? But between all those children climbing on it and parents taking pictures I feel the history The people who once dragged these stones together And held celebrations here, honored seasons or buried people Here I feel what the earth once was like, how the stones must have stood majestically in the forests Where there is now sea after sea after sea of fields for cattle When I feel the rough structure of stone under my hands I feel a friend Someone who knows what it's like To be like a pile of stones In a world full of amusement parks and festivals (Psstt. These are no dolmen (or "hunebedden" in Dutch) on the picture but a temple - but I wrote this poem a while back and wanted to share it, and I liked the picture :) Photo made by my dear friend Evelien.
